But&#8230;the links on this page lead you to the official website where you can get two versions: the same physical package, but for just $97 and the digital (downloadable) version for only $67! I personally wouldn&#8217;t need the physical version, so you can save $62 bucks by going for the digital version!</p>
<p>Now, some common sense: you know that you cannot just buy it and do nothing. You have to really apply what you learn. I just have to add this as some people are still not ready to make changes. I simply encourage you to do so.</p>

<p class="dtm-content">Take small steps to become more social, and take medication as a last resort. The more social you are, the easier it gets. You start to realize that there really isnt anything to be afraid of- whats the worst that could happen? You begin to realize that everyone has issues, and not everyone is great at communicating with others. One thing I like to do is just fake my confidence.</p>
<p class="dtm-content">Try to go out and just pretend you are at ease. Smile and be friendly to people, who will probablly just consider you the quiet type. I used to have some major telephone anxiety. Im still not great at calling people, but the more I &#8220;just did it&#8221; the easier it has become. One thing I do is just always think about what I want to say before hand, and what topics to bring up that people might find interesting. If it makes you feel any better, just know that social anxiety is extremely common. I think its the second most common mental disorder after anxiety.</p>

<p>There may be many, many reasons why we don&#8217;t meditate; but I think I can boil it down to two really specific things that keep us from meditating.  I was exposed to meditation when I was 19 years old.  I was studying psychology as an undergraduate in college and exploring the work of Herbert Benson out of Harvard.  Herbert Benson really researched the benefits, physiologically, of meditation.  I started meditating right away but there were gaps, breaks in my meditation.  Why?  Though I was very impressed with Dr. Benson&#8217;s work, I was 19 years old and things like blood pressure and medical benefits weren&#8217;t really an issue for me at that time.  Dr. Benson talked a lot about the physiological effects that meditation had on your body.  I was 19 and quite healthy.  I wasn&#8217;t concerned yet about my blood pressure or the medical benefits of meditation because I wasn&#8217;t feeling any health problems at that time.  I enjoyed meditation; I enjoyed relaxing and feeling very peaceful.  Sometimes days, even weeks would go by without me meditating.  Why?  This is really the first reason many of us don&#8217;t meditate.  We really need a good reason to do something.  We need a reason to meditate.  If we&#8217;re going to spend a half an hour a day doing something we need to know what we&#8217;re doing really changes us or adds to our overall happiness.  Our lives are busy and our time is precious so we don&#8217;t want to ‘waste&#8217; it doing something that we don&#8217;t know for sure is beneficial.  We may think &#8220;yes, this makes me feel nice and relaxed but it doesn&#8217;t&#8217; really change me or add to my overall happiness.&#8221;  What changed for me is that many years later I met people who I felt were very deep, very healthy, very emotionally and spiritually mature people.  What I learned about them, pretty much across the board, was that they meditated.  They attested to meditation, they practiced meditation and they encouraged me to meditate.  Because I really love growth, once I really understood how important meditation was to my own personal growth I started to meditate regularly.  Once I started meditating regularly I saw the change within me.  I began to change, radically change, and people around me noticed it too.</p>
<p>So the first thing that keeps us from meditating is that we really need a reason to meditate.  As humans, we vacillate between two poles.  At one end there is immediate gratification.  &#8220;I&#8217;m tired, it was a long day and I&#8217;m going to have myself a few beers to relax.&#8221;  Or &#8220;When I go to Vegas I always have such a great time, even though I come back exhausted.  It sure feels great while I&#8217;m there, so I go.&#8221;  So the first thing we do is look for something pleasurable.  We want to feel good.  Meditation can address this because once you start meditating on a regular basis you will begin to feel good.  However, meditation takes time to work.  You have to stick with it before you begin to really feel the deep affects of it.  It will be better than having a few beers or going to Vegas, but it takes time.</p>
<p>So the second aspect that affects our behavior is our goals.  As a profession in general, surgeons make more money than any other profession out there.  But, they have to go to college for four years, and do very well.  Then they have to go to medical school for another four years and do very well.  Then they go off to do a residency for anywhere from five to seven years, working sometimes 100 hours a week.  So why would they do this?  They do this because of their goals.  They realize that in the end they will be working in a very lucrative profession and have a very secure job.  So besides the immediate effects of mediation we also need a deep, heartfelt reason as to why we are going to meditate day after day, week after week, year after year.  For me this reason came from learning from others; from people who taught me that meditation is truly the number one change agent on the planet.  If you want to grow, if you want to wake up and have a beautiful life then meditation is the key factor to this.  But you have to believe it at the core, because like the surgeons going through medical school can be hard sometimes; meditation can be hard sometimes.  It&#8217;s not a bad experience but sometimes we&#8217;re just too tired, too busy to take the time to meditate.  Until we reach a point where meditation really, really is something we are invested in and believe that it will radically change our lives for the better, we&#8217;re probably not going to meditate on a regular basis.  There are just too many things out there that are calling for our attention.  Telling us to come do this, come do that, this is more important.  I can absolutely guarantee you that meditation is truly the most important thing you can do in your life for creating a beautiful, important, wonderful life.  But until you believe this, other things will get in the way and distract you.  What you can do is to find someone that can really motivate you to meditate.  I would love to be this person to you, but I also know that I cannot be all things to all people.  Some of us are research minded; we want to see the facts.  If that&#8217;s you, then there are many research articles out there, on my website and in my podcasts even, which explain how beneficial meditation is to you.  Over the years I&#8217;ve seen many hardcore professionals change their meditative ways drastically after attending a retreat with my partner and me.  That&#8217;s why retreats are very helpful in this sense.  Or perhaps you can find a local group near your home to meditate with others.  Sometimes, it&#8217;s a lot like an exercise class; we are more inspired to attend regularly if there are others there to meditate with us.</p>
<p>So there are really two main reasons why we don&#8217;t meditate.  One is that at first it may not give us enough pleasure to keep our attention.  My response to that is to be patient, it will bring you pleasure if you hang in there.  It&#8217;s similar to exercise, at first we don&#8217;t realize how good the exercise makes us feel until we&#8217;ve started doing it regularly and then our bodies actually crave that exercise.  Your mind reacts in the same way.  As you meditate regularly your mind too will crave those meditative states.  It will grow to be the highlight of your day.</p>
<p>The second thing that often keeps us from meditating is that we don&#8217;t really believe that it&#8217;s good for us.  So if you want to meditate, make sure you&#8217;re connected with someone or something that drives it deep down inside of you that you need to meditate, meditation is really good for you.  Continue to listen to my podcasts online, meditate regularly, find someone or something that inspires you to continue to meditate and you will realize as time goes on that you feel the effects of the meditation.  That person, that story, that connection that makes you realize the importance of meditation will also make you realize that meditation is a key part to your life.</p>

<p> Progressive muscle relaxation [PMR] is a relaxation technique of stress management developed by American physician Edmund Jacobson in 1934. This progressive muscle relaxation technique is focused on tensing and releasing tensions in the 16 different muscle groups. Jacobson reasoned that since muscular tension is usually followed as a by product of anxiety, one can lower and reduce anxiety by understanding and learning how to self relax those muscular tension. (McCallie et al., 2006)</p>
<p>Joseph Wolpe (Conrad and Roth, 2006 ) further adjusted this technique for use with systematic desensitization in 1948. Subsequently, both Bernstein and Borkovec in 1973 (Bernstein and Borkovec, 1973) came out with adjustments to the technique to suit cognitive behavioral stress management. Empirical proofs also supports the use of progressive muscle relaxation in high level tension responses and mind body techniques such as: irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, reducing tension headaches, adjunct treatment in cancer and chronic pain management in inflammatory arthritis.(McCallie et al., 2006)</p>
<p>Let us take a closer look at what exactly is progressive muscle relaxation and how does this technique work. The idea behind progressive muscle relaxation is simply that of isolating one muscle group at a time, then intentionally creating muscle tension for 8-10 seconds, and then allowing the muscle to totally relax so as to release the tensions.</p>
<p>Taking for instance, when we take our right hand and tighten it into a fist with all our force, we can feel the muscle tension slowly increase in our hand and all the way up to the forearm. The longer we hold the tension and force, the more tense the arm becomes. The body will then become conscious that it does not feel comfortable in this position at all, where pain might even start to occur.</p>
<p>The above demonstrates an instance of intentionally exaggerated muscle tension in the body. When such tension exists around the forehead, one would usually experience headache and if it is around the neck area, a neck ache would be experienced. When the body continued to hold the muscle tension and then all at once, relax and totally let go, a difference will be felt when the hand is allowed to flop down onto the lap. The muscles around the arm now start to relax, and the muscle tension slowly flows away and disappears.</p>
<p>Based on the principle of muscle physiology, this process of relaxation is proven to work. The muscle has to relax whenever tension is being created in a muscle and then release. This happens because the muscle does not have a choice and it must react in this manner.</p>
<p>The interesting part of this process is that the muscle will not only quickly relax back to its pre-tensed state, and when it is allowed to rest, the muscle will become even more relaxed that it was before the tension was created. When this procedure of creating tension in the muscles and then releasing of the tension is applied to every major muscle group of the body, all of these muscles will become more relaxed prior to the beginning.</p>
<p>The main idea to initiating the relaxation response in this way is to take control of the voluntary muscles through creation of tension in them, followed by forcing them into a state of relaxation. When the body is aware of the presence of the tension, it will respond by triggering the muscles to relax, where the rest of the other components of the relaxation response will naturally follow.</p>
<p>Lesser oxygen is needed for relaxed muscle and hence the rate of breathing is slow. Since the heart does not require to be beating so fast to supply oxygen out to tense muscles, heart rate and blood pressure decline. Thus the normal blood flow will returns to the belly and digestion resumes where the belly is calmed and also the hands and feet are warmed up. As a result, this series of body adaptations all occur and fall naturally into place as the voluntary muscles are being directed into a state of relaxation, and changes in mood followed which make the body feeling calm and refreshed.      </p>

<p>There are medications that can be taken before a flight to try to help calm the nerves and lower anxiety on takeoff and during the flight. But some of these can have some side effects, and in any case, many people just don&#8217;t like taking these kind of drugs.</p>
<p>But there are natural ways to avoid anxiety attacks while flying that you can implement to help make your flight stress and anxiety free. To understand how these can work, it&#8217;s worth looking at what causes anxiety attacks in the first place.</p>
<p>What Causes Anxiety Attacks?</p>
<p>Anxiety attacks are the physical and mental manifestation of your body&#8217;s primeval &#8216;fight or flight&#8217; response to a &#8216;perceived&#8217; physical threat to itself. Your body only needs to &#8216;think&#8217; there is a threat, and it&#8217;ll trigger chemical changes around your body that set you up to be better able to fight against an aggressor or run away to safety.</p>
<p>But there is no physical threat is there? Remember I said it only needs to &#8216;think&#8217; there&#8217;s one. And this perception can be simply through your own anxiety levels rising, through your fear of flying, to such an extent that your subconscious reads that as being the &#8216;threat&#8217; and so triggers the fight or flight response.</p>
<p>When this happens, the changes in your body, to instantly prepare you to stand and fight or run away, manifest as the symptoms of an anxiety attack; rapid breathing, racing heartbeat, tightness in the chest, hot / cold flashes, tingling in hands, nausea, a feeling of detachment, a feeling of impending doom, etc.</p>
<p>You can see, then, that anxiety attack symptoms are just the result of your body&#8217;s natural response to something that doesn&#8217;t exist. In other words, you aren&#8217;t in any danger, and these symptoms cannot harm you. It is all a big mistake!</p>
<p>You need to reduce the stress and anxiety that you build up within yourself before the flight. Because it&#8217;s your very fear of having an anxiety attack during the flight that will trigger the anxiety attack. You see, your fear of an attack builds upon your already (natural) high stress and anxiety, that nearly everyone has prior to travelling, particularly when flying.</p>
<p>But most people don&#8217;t suffer anxiety attacks when flying, so don&#8217;t have that in-built fear of one. But folks &#8211; perhaps like yourself &#8211; who do suffer anxiety attacks, do have this fear, and it builds on your naturally heightened travel anxiety to trigger an anxiety attack.</p>
<p>How to Avoid Anxiety Attacks When Flying</p>
<p>Okay, you now understand what causes your attacks, so how do you avoid anxiety attacks when flying, without drug-based medication?.</p>
<p>The following are practical things you can do to help prevent your general anxiety levels rising too much when travelling by air:-</p>
<p>(1) When planning your trip, make a checklist of all documents you need and tick them off. Also, anything else you need to do, tick those off as you do them. Ensure you&#8217;re aware of any luggage or other restrictions. Make sure you tick off everything as you do them, so that you don&#8217;t need to worry like &#8216;did I switch off the&#8230;&#8217; and &#8216;did I cancel the&#8230;&#8217; type issues.</p>
<p>(2) Make sure you keep all your documents safe and for easy access. Arrange to get to the airport check-in in plenty of time. That way you can be through and have plenty of time to relax in the lounge.</p>
<p>(3) Don&#8217;t drink alcohol before or during the flight. It might be tough, I know, but alcohol is a known stimulant so can actually raise your general anxiety levels, making it easier for your &#8216;fear&#8217; of an attack to trigger one.</p>
<p>(4) In the same way don&#8217;t drink too much coffee, tea, fizzy drinks, energy drinks, etc., because they contain the stimulant caffeine.</p>
<p>(5) Do drink lots and lots of water before and during your flight in order to stay well-hydrated.</p>
<p>Next, the following are techniques to follow should you feel an anxiety attack coming on:-</p>
<p>(1) Important! At the onset, repeat to yourself words along the lines of &#8216;I know what this is now, and, I know that these symptoms cannot harm me. I also know that they will pass very shortly. Go on do your worst!&#8217;</p>
<p>(2) Breath slowly and rhythmically, not fast and shallow. And not too deeply either. Breath in through the nose and out through your mouth. You do this to re-balance your carbon dioxide / oxygen ratio.</p>
<p>(3) Use &#8216;distraction&#8217; to take your focus off of your attack. Try to engage in conversation, read a magazine, listen to music, study a particular facet of the aircraft cabin, etc. Close your eyes and think of a particularly peaceful / happy event in the past and replay it in your mind, over and over again.</p>
<p>You Must Break the Vicious Cycle of Anxiety</p>
<p>The tips above can be very effective in controlling anxiety attacks when flying. But you need to get to a position where you won&#8217;t even worry about flying and anxiety attacks anymore. How can you do this? You achieve this by eliminating your fear of always having anxiety attacks every time you fly.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not the flight that is worrying you, it&#8217;s the fear of having an attack whilst flying. This is a vicious cycle of general anxiety &gt;&gt; fear of an attack &gt;&gt; an attack &gt;&gt; general anxiety &gt;&gt; fear of an attack &gt;&gt; an attack &gt;&gt; and so on, and on. You must break-out of this cycle to achieve your goal.</p>
